Let's talk GRAS

What is GRAS?

If  you don't know what GRAS is, don't feel bad.  I just recently learned about it myself.   You're probably more aware of it than you know.  If you've ever read a food label and had no idea what the ingredients were (nevermind pronouncing them!), then you have an idea of what GRAS is.

Generally Recognized As Safe

As in chemicals and substances that the FDA has found to be safe in small amounts.  You can learn more about GRAS by clicking RIGHT HERE!  It will take you the FDA's FAQ on GRAS.

Now, to be clear, I am not a fanatical about preservatives and additives. However, I do have some concerns.

1.)  How much of that "safe" amount would one have to consume before it became unsafe?  What if I ate multiple servings of different products that contained these chemicals on a daily basis?

2.)  How can the "safe" amount be determined for both a preschooler and a full grown man?

3.)  Does "safe" equal "healthy"?

4.)  How do these "safe" substances react with medications?

I've been eating these GRAS additives for a long time.  I haven't exploded into flames so I'm guessing that yes, they are reasonably safe. That doesn't mean they haven't impacted my health in ways I don't know or attribute to them.

After doing a little research on some common substances that are GRAS,  I really don't WANT to eat them if I can avoid them.  For example,  Silicon Dioxide!  Many people are finding that their medical issues are eliminated or reduced when cutting these "safe" additives from their diet.

That's where Wildtree comes in.

Wildtree was founded by a family's efforts to meet their children's dietary restrictions.  You can read more about it by clicking right HERE.

I found this presentation from the 2009 Wildtree National Conference.  It is entitled "What is Natural? What is Wildtree's Natural?"  If you aren't interested in reading the entire thing,  I highly recommend scrolling down to the last four pages.

Natural means many things to many people.

With that in mind,  Wildtree has a list of what Natural means to them and their products.  I was intrigued by the last two slides.  "We do not allow ingredients in our manufacturing facility that are included in the following list" . . .that list is extensive and I find that reassuring.

More on GRAS to come!
